Sales Octane #13

In this economic time with find ourselves in, growth strategies seem to stall or are rapidly put in idle. Small business owners are so concerned about today’s environment (which action plans should have already been in place) that they cannot see beyond the end of the week. This attitude brings progress in growth to a grinding halt or at the very least emergency braking.

Many businesses are approaching boundaries of what it realistically can accomplish within this attitude of “holding on”. Strategies need to be taught, learned, and implemented in order for businesses to continue on the path of growth. Business owners need be taught new ways to approach growth, innovation, and communication.

Many businesses work in an environment that looks for innovation, but it is not found. Borders are needed to be redrawn on the implementation of our business structure or the community will bypass or put aside small business.

The current path that many small businesses find themselves on needs correction and guidance. Small business change needs to follow an underlying theme: more decentralization. Decentralization needs to happen from the top down. Decentralization will allow the business to grow again and at a pace that will gain momentum as the next economic cycle presents itself.

Small business assets (people) should be given more latitude in a discussion of “fuel” or growth. By involving more and more people using transparency through decentralization, they can start to see the vision, see your commitment, and feel part of the overall growth (success) of the business.

By empowering people to take an active role, it will take some of the decision-making burden off of management and put the reins in the hands of your greatest asset your people. All small businesses have people. Good people. From bankers, to accounts, from associations, to vendors. Business has people, good people that need to be trained, that need to be involved, and given opportunities to redraw boundaries for success.

Small business has shown that innovation can make business more maneuverable and able to react to changes. This innovation needs to be taught not only from what it can accomplish for each but how to sell, implement, and profit from these innovations. Everyone needs to see that your business environment is working with them, taking their ideas and concerns, splicing them into an innovation process? “An innovation that does not address a need is an innovation that is created in a vacuum and will probably have no growth effect on business.”

Your small business should be on one page. A part of spurring growth is to get your idea-makers to start thinking outside of their circle. They need to be together to think together. Achievements can be extraordinary. Forward reaching goals set and made. By involving more and more people, you get a feeling of what can be accomplished by your business.

Innovation, decentralization, and transparency will lead business down the path of growth again. These three characters can work by themselves, but by working together they build a superior vehicle for the drive.
