Block and Fulcum

Sales Octane #16

I’ll bet you haven’t heard that phrase since 3rd grade science class with Mrs. McCreedy.

The Block and Fulcrum” principle taught in elementary school should have carried with you through, middle school, high school, and onto your commencement. At commencement you move your tassel to the left, start your career and wonder why you ever had to learn about the “Block and Fulcrum”.

In business the “Block and Fulcrum” is leverage. Leverage is an advantage that helps your business move. I am not talking about cousin Vinnie’s type of leverage, the leverage I am writing about the action of a lever pivoting about a point. The old “block and fulcrum”.

The “fulcrum” is your business. Your business is the base in the equation or the pivot point that is used to multiply a force that can be applied to another object.

The “block” represents something in your business that you want to move. It can be sales, people, products, etc.

Next is the “lever”. This is a structure (rigid) that when used with your business (the fulcrum) it can multiply the force (momentum) that is applied to what you want to move (block).  A lever can be a marketing campaign, a branding event, a partnership, joint venture, etc.

The trick is to (there is always a trick) knowing how and when to apply the lever.

The neat thing about “Block and Fulcrum” leverage is when you have the right lever and the correct block you can use this principle over and over again to move your block and your business.
