The Maverick Rule of Frank
Sales Octane #41
The Maverick Rule of the Frank
Maverick says “being frank can turn trouble into a surprise ending.”
Do you read bumper stickers?
Some make you laugh. Some make you think. Some question reality. Some just question. Most are short and “frank”.
Can marketers really be frank? Being frank can put an interesting twist on a product or service. Admit a fault and then roll right into a positive.
Self deprecating confessions are very disarming, especially in marketing. You do not have to prove a negative statement, but you will have to pretty darn convincing to have a client agree with your positive statements.
How about these companies?
Avis- We’re #2, we try harder!
Timex - Takes a licking, but keeps on ticking!
Oldsmobile – This is not your father’s Oldsmobile.
Fat Pig Chocolate – Bad for you in a good way!
Positive marketing is not the only way to approach your prospect. Our media today is so explosive that we are being sold all the time. We have become defensive. We are weary of companies selling stuff. Being frank about your product with a twist can work in your favor.
This rule must be used with great care. A fault is still a negative thought in the prospects mind. The key is not to have that thought sink in. You have to move very quickly to the upside. Pain then pleasure, ah satisfaction.
Oink if you Love It!
