What is Your Story?
Sales Octane #67
Sometimes people believe to be on the edge actually come back off the cliff and relate to our time and today's business. Hugh MacLeod is one of those people. Some consider him a deviant, some positive and some negative.
Back in 2004 Hugh hit marketing on the head! A real truth will remain after they clear out all the dead presidents. He wrote:
"THE MARKET FOR SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN IS INFINITE."
We are here to find meaning. We are here to help other people do the same. Everything else is secondary.
We humans want to believe in our own species. And we want people, companies and products in our lives that make it easier to do so. That is human nature. Hugh Macleod of gapingvoid.com
The insight that Hugh discovered here is that marketing and human drive need to find in the meaning in each other to be successful. Marketing failure can be directly related to this non-awaking by each.
Advertisers need to appeal to our human side. Our human existence and experience. The point here is to fill in the narrative voids in our lives. The most successful marketers use their own lives and stories to fill in the gap.
How do you find meaning in the void? How can you discover what needs the gap has created in your client? Where do your story and/or product fit into this opening?
The bridge between the client and the market is opportunity. - davism
